Engineering Lead
Al Johri is a software engineer and the project lead for the Brown Institute’s Local News Lab. Formerly a senior data scientist at the Washington Post, Al brings a wealth of experience working on successful machine learning projects that helped further the paper’s business goals, while paying close attention to journalistic ethics and editorial concerns. He has designed subscription propensity models, recommendation engines, article classifiers, and Heliograf, an automated story generator.
Al is a hacker, maker, newsperson, and civic technologist who is passionate about open source software and reproducible data science. He holds a degree in Computer Science from Northwestern University where he also worked at the Knight Lab. Outside of work, Al enjoys singing Indian classical music, playing with hardware and electronics, and eating tacos.
