‘The Wrangler’ training series

Watch videos at ohyay.co/s/wrangler.

The Wrangler is a two-day training series — a “choose your own adventure” introduction to the new technologies of journalism. Your guides on these adventures will be both subject area experts as well as practicing journalists. We’ll show you how things work, and how they’ve been used by reporters. This all happened November 13th and 14th at https://ohyay.co/s/wrangler .

Each of The Wrangler’s two days is divided into 90 minute to 2-hour sessions. At any point there will be 3 to 4 workshops running in parallel and you decide which sessions you are going to attend.

So far, we have recruited 28 presenters who will be introducing tools like R and Python and Svelte, and leading hands-on workshops on Open Source Digital Investigations, Data Visualization, Mapping, Natural Language Processing and Network Analysis. There will also be skills workshops on how to tell your stories on social media, and the best ways to fashion FOIA requests. And we have a few “this is how we did it” sessions with leading journalists in computation. We’ve even added a dose of Entrepreneurship and Product Thinking for you to sample.

Our presenters come from 6 time zones (from the US to the UK to India and Singapore) organized into 27 sessions and touching 7 broad themes. The presenters are a mix of subject area experts and practicing journalists. We have representation from news organizations like ProPublica, The New York Times, Buzzfeed, Bloomberg, The Guardian and The Markup, investigative teams like Bellingcat and Forensic Architecture, and other partners like Neo4j and Hearken.

This should be an amazing weekend! The Wrangler is about expanding your reporting skills and seeing your work in new ways.
