A Science-Media Meetup for Climate Stories With Impact

For Climate week, the Brown Institute is partnering with the Earth Institute at Columbia University to bring you an event at the crossroads of  journalism and climate science, beginning with a conversation between New York Times international climate reporter Somini Sengupta, Moses Shumow, documentary filmmaker and Associate Professor at Emerson College, and John Upton, an environmental journalist whose expertise lies in building in-roads to scientific communities. The event will include discussions between journalism students, PhD candidates, and post-docs, and conclude with a call to action delivered by Ros Donald and Andy Revkin.

Distinguished Lecture Series – Stephanie Hankey

The Distinguished Lectures in Computational Innovation series highlights programmers, data scientists, and other practitioners from the private and public sectors who lead cutting-edge technology initiatives such as Python, C++, and the Open Source Initiative. Stephanie Hankey is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Tactical Tech, an NGO that “explores and mitigates the impacts of technology on society.” Hankey is a designer, technologist and activist whose work explores the politics of data.

Brown Institute Showcase

This year’s showcase will bring together the brilliant minds behind the 2018-19 batch of Magic Grants, and let us peek into their process as they show off the results of over a year of work. Come mingle with researchers and journalists pushing the forefront of augmented reality, machine-learning backed media projects, and stories that blend data with painstakingly detailed reporting.

How Charts Lie – A Talk by Alberto Cairo

Join us for an evening talk by data visualization expert Alberto Cairo, author of the upcoming book How Charts Lie, for a discussion of how visuals may be misunderstood and misused. This understanding, how to interpret and analyze visual information, is an essential new skill for journalists.

Transparency Series – Natural Language Processing

Join us for this season’s first Transparency Series workshop, an introduction to Natural Language Processing with NYU Tisch School of the Arts Professor Allison Parish. This day-long workshop will introduce creative ways to interact with textual data and include some programming with Python.

Transparency Series – Reporting on Twitter

Twitter has become the de facto center of public discourse on the Internet, where friends’ life updates sit alongside policy updates by the President of the United States. This workshop, led by Buzzfeed Editor Craig Silverman, will spend the day teaching journalists how to make sense of, and report on, this complicated web of conversation, disinformation, and public discourse.
