SUMMARY:Information Session: Innovation Challenge in Journalism\, Media and Technology
DESCRIPTION:Supporting the creation of new content\, new forms of participation in journalism\, contributions to our understanding of media and society. \nJoin us for the first information session for our inaugural Innovation Challenge in journalism media and technology! \nRegister at Eventbrite \nTechnology shapes our media\, inventing new ways for us to share information and learn about the world. The Brown Institute Innovation Challenge in Journalism\, Media\, and Technology aims to support ventures creating new content\, designing new forms of participation\, contributing to our understanding of media and society\, or experimenting with entirely new ways to communicate. Successful projects can be either for-profit or non-profit ventures — The Brown Institute is as concerned with business successes as with sustainable social impacts. \nBrown encourages proposals for new tech-based or tech-enabled forms of media — these might make novel uses of computer vision\, AI\, NLP\, machine learning\, data visualization or even VR/AR to create\, communicate\, and interpret content. Eligible ventures can also be topically aligned\, building custom platforms to explore complex issues in new ways. What are the long-term societal impacts of COVID? Are communities equally prepared for Climate Change? How can we spot or intervene with mis/disinformation? (To be successful\, a topically-oriented application must have a plan for sustainability\, as this challenge is meant to support new ventures and not to produce a single published news story.)

Grantees develop new ways to find and tell stories —  producing platforms that extend our creativity\, or creating powerful new works of journalism. \n\nA Magic Grant can mean financial support for you and your team for up to a year (fellowships at Columbia\, research positions at Stanford)\nA Magic Grant can provide funding for your project — for production\, prototyping\, or purchasing services\, software or equipment\nA Magic Grant offers access to mentorship and our extensive alumni network\n\nThe Magic Grant program provides year-long funding awards of up to $150\,000 ($300\,000 for teams with members of both the Columbia and Stanford communities and their collaborators).
