2013-2015 Magic Grantee

David is a Ph.D. candidate in electrical engineering at Stanford University, where he works in the Social Algorithms Group, led by Professor Ashish Goel. His thesis focuses on the design of algorithms and systems for large-scale decision-making. His research interests include opinion formation dynamics, attitude polarization, computational social choice, crowdsourcing and collective intelligence, and participatory and deliberative democracy. One of the platforms he has been working on is Synapp (, a website which facilitates large-scale collaboration and decision-making. He is the recipient of an NSF graduate research fellowship, a two-time recipient of the Brown Institute for Media Innovation Magic Grant, and is an Accel Innovation Scholar. Prior to Stanford, he obtained a B.Sc. in electrical engineering at the California Institute of Technology, where he worked with Professor Jehoshua Bruck on research projects at the intersection of randomness, computation, and biology, an area in which he is still very interested.

David is part of the Synapp/Widescope Magic Grant team.

Established in 2012, the Institute is a collaboration between Columbia and Stanford Universities. Our mission is simple: Sponsor thinking, building and speculating on how stories are discovered and told in a networked, digitized world.
